Clerk basics - delivered by SALC  

Combined, these three workshops cover the basics to enable clerks to learn about the key aspects of their role. 

Session 1 covers:

  • Working as a team - roles and responsibilities

  • Professional development 

  • Civility and Respect

Session 2 covers:

  • How councils work in practice

  • Meetings,  agendas and minutes

  • Standards and Code of Conduct

  • Managing information

Session 3 covers:

  • Finance and audit

  • Recruitment and vacancies

  • Community engagement

  • Planning and consultations 

Each session lasts 2 hours

New clerk's finance - delivered by The Parkinson Partnership

An introductory session designed to give inexperienced and new clerks an overview of a council's year, along with a basic understanding of the RFO role.  If you have more than 9 month's experience or more this session is unlikely to cover anything you dont already know.  Please leave this session for very new clerks and book yourself onto the more detailed session below.

The session covers:

  • Roles and responsibilities

  • Setting a budget and precept

  • Internal control

  • The Annual Governance and Accountability Return (AGAR)

  • Internal and external audit

Each session lasts 1 hr 40 mins

Budgeting for clerks and finance staff - delivered by The Parkinson Partnership

This session is aimed at officers who are involved in preparing and monitoring budgets

The session covers:

  • setting a budget and precept

  • contingencies and reserves

  • how the council tax base affects the budget

  • initiation

  • budget monitoring

Trello - delivered by Ducks-in-a-Row

Learn what Trello is, how it works, and how it can be used to manage daily tasks and keep track of projects.  
In this training session, participants will embark on a journey of discover into the world of Trello, a dynamic and intuitive organisation tool. The core objective of this session is to equip attendees with a basic understanding of how Trello works and how it can be effectively harnessed to streamline daily tasks. Expect to delve into the intricacies of Trello's boards, gaining practical insights into how to create, organise, and prioritise tasks with ease. By the end of the session, attendees will have a firm grasp of how to get started with Trello and will be well-prepared to implement this efficient tool to manage their daily responsibilities and track the progress of their tasks. 

The training is done on the FREE version of Trello.
