You may have seen reports indicating that the Government is minded delaying the inaugural mayoral elections for Norfolk and Suffolk. These elections were originally scheduled for May 2026 but may now be pushed back to 2028.

The first and most important point to make is that this development is not related to Local Government Reorganisation (LGR).LGR and devolution are two separate processes, albeit closely linked. There have been no announcements concerning next year’s county council elections, and the situation regarding those remains unchanged.
When it comes to devolution, Suffolk County Council have confirmed that they are currently assessing the implications of this proposed delay and have assured SALC that they are actively reviewing the situation and will continue to work through what this means for our collective plans and timelines.
Norfolk and Suffolk are not alone in receiving this update. Other areas, including Sussex and Brighton, Hampshire and the Solent, and Greater Essex, have also been informed of the same proposal.
Suffolk Council County recognises that this news may raise questions, and they are committed to keeping us informed and sharing updates as soon as they can.
