New Councillor Welcome Pack Template Now Available

Welcoming new councillors into their role is one of the most important steps a council can take to build confidence, clarity, and good governance from day one. To help councils support their newly elected or co-opted members, SALC has developed a new Councillor Welcome Pack template, now available to download from the SALC Member Portal.

This template has been designed to give councils a ready-to-use, fully editable resource that brings together all the essential information a new councillor needs. It aims to make the induction process smoother, more consistent, and easier for both councils and councillors.

Councils can personalise the pack with their own policies, links, and details, ensuring it reflects how they operate while keeping the core structure simple and supportive.

The welcome pack includes sections on:

  • The role of a councillor and the Register of Interests

  • Key documents such as Standing Orders, Financial Regulations, and the Code of Conduct

  • Access to SALC training and the Member Portal

  • Basic council finance information

  • Useful contact details

This resource aims to make induction smoother for new members and strengthen good governance from the start.

You can now download the editable template from the Templates section of the SALC Member Portal, under the Election, or Co-option categories.
